Social Media and Doberge

Hi, I’m Aimee and I have been Facebook free for 17 days (at least at the time of typing this up).

Current social media is like being in an over crowded room (CUE: THE FIRE MARSHALS ARE COMING!) where everyone is at arms length yelling at each other, but nothing productive is being done about any of the issues.  There’s just constant noise.

Being a pretty sensitive and “run for your life at the first sign of an argument” person, the only thing that made sense was to leave the room.  I can be depressed and agitated on my own, thanks.  Social media was ruining my bubble and skewing my view of the world.tastybitedoberge-resize1

I didn’t even realize how much time I’d spent reading about other people’s trips to the grocery store or how many Pokemon they caught in a day until I left.  I also figured if people tell me what they ate for dinner or something funny that happened to them they would call me on the phone and tell me about it.  I’m serious.  I’d want to know so I can laugh out loud with you!  You know how I know that?  My sweet elderly neighbor called me one day to ask what kind of pan to use to bake cookies.  I loved it.  It wasn’t a passive post on the internet for anyone’s taking.  He called and asked ME.  It was so sweet.

I work in customer service.  I LOVE talking to people, seeing their quirks, and hearing about their lives.  People are truly fascinating and everyone has a story that should be heard.  Social media blurs that out.  It masks the bad and only shows the highlights.  If you listen to the bad you can learn about their past and see what shaped them into who they are.  I am a person who likes to know why.  Social media cuts the “why I am so screwed up” out and only shows the victories.  It lacks genuine concern.

Anyway, besides being overwhelmed with the news and the world being insane I’ve included watching government conspiracy documentaries on Netflix.  That ought to fix my paranoia.

doberge2-resize3Can I just bake all day and keep my rose colored glasses on?  PLEASE!

In the last two weeks I’ve made my trainwreck cake, sold my first doberge cake, and had an emotional breakdown planning my Grand Canyon trip.  I was also motivated to finally start this website/blog/whatever it is.  SO MUCH MORE TIME!

The doberge was bought by my dietician friend of all people.  She is from Missouri and never had it before.  There are so many wonderful bakeries around here who have been around for years, but she bought her in laws anniversary cake from me.  No pressure or anything.

I had leftover pudding from her cake so I made one to photograph (and eat).  After taking my pictures when I went to pick it up half left and half stayed on the plate.  There was a pile of doberge debris.  All that work and time.  Sometimes, the cake decides when it needs to be eaten.
