King Cakes-Keep it Simple

This blog started as a photography project/food blog.

So, today it’s about King Cakes.  I wrote a post a while back about how I learned to make them here...

My first King Cake of 2018

My friend Debbie keeps me in aprons….I mean, ‘pinnies’…

She bought me this awesome apron and also got me my very first one last year from England.  (I don’t know how I lived without one!)  I even wrote a post about how I learned to make British ‘Scawns‘ vs American Scones…

Anyway, each year I think the King Cakes get better. 🙂

The first King Cake I ever made was in 2015 and the recipe scarred me for life.  Making bread intimidated me and after all that work the final product tasted like white bread with sugar on it.  Gross.  Where is the flavor and who thought publishing that was a good idea?!

I combined that recipe with another and tweaked it……..and finally… a King Cake I can sleep at night about. 😛

Baking is like a therapy for me (that sounds like an idol, doesn’t it).  God has used it to teach me lessons as insane as that sounds.  It is being in total control and simultaneously learning to let go.  It’s learning patience as you cannot rush the process of dough rising.  It will rise when it is ready. 🙂

Not everything is perfect nor has to be and sometimes you will make mistakes.  How else will you learn never to do THAT again if you don’t fail miserably?  (Example: Not throwing an entire cake away because you’re missing 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon…been there…done that.)  I like it over cooking because of how precise you have to be.  Cooking gives you more leniency whereas baking is exact…put too much baking soda and it’s a flop.

I like to tell people asking others whether they prefer is a personality test.  You can find out a lot about a person simply by asking if they like baking or cooking more.

I’ve found people who like baking are more rigid and people who like cooking more are more spontaneous. 🙂
